Kapurthala ashram inmate dies in Amritsar

Bunty (20), an inmate of the the Home for Mentally Retarded (Sukhjit Ashram), Kapurthala, who was shifted to Amritsar Medical College, breathed his last on Friday. He was suffering from fits and hepatitis.

Kapurthala DC Jaskiran Singh said since there was no neurosurgeon in Kapurthala, the youth was shifted to Amritsar on August 16. The DC revealed that 12 male children were also shifted to MR Home in Rajpura, while now only 18 female children were living in the Kapurthala ashram. Despite passage of over two weeks, the district administration has failed to locate the persons who donated food to the ashram children which led to the death of two and rendered 30 ill. 

Central team pays visit

A team of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disability led by Director Jahnvi A Warra from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment today visited the Sukhjit ashram.

Warra said the team would submit a report to the Centre on the lack of facilities in the ashram. “We will recommend schooling for children below 15 years of age and special vocational training for other children. Even the staff of the ashram will be provided training on how to nurture these children,” Warra added.

The Director also interacted with the staff of the ashram.
