Jind, December 20

Blamed for opposing girls, khaps in the state are these days working towards improving the sex ratio as the Sarv Bhura Khap announced to fight for the rights of girls.

It also announced to change its ancient social norms, which khap leaders said were troubling its members rather than bringing any improvement.

During a state-level meeting of the khap here today, its state executives decided to honour all its members who would not give birth to the third child after having two daughters and promote marriage without dowry.

“Khaps are always blamed for skewed sex ratio, but the truth is that we have always tried to fight against female foeticide. Today, during the meeting of the state executives, we have decided to honour all our members, who would not give birth to the third child after two daughters and marry sons without dowry,” said Rajbir Bura, president, Bura Khap.

During the meeting, khap leaders also decided to change their ancient mandatory norm of 13 days mourning after the death of a family member and reduced it to seven days.

During their meeting, it emerged that many a times the poor had to take a debt to marry their daughter. The khap members decided to change this custom also.

“We have also decided that now onwards, all members of our khap will only take 21 persons as marriage party members to the house of the bride and help her family in curtailing the expense,” said Bura.
