Jammu cagers taste victory on Day 1

BANUR: The University of Jammu defeated Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, 81-63 in the inaugural match of the North Zone Inter-University Basketball (Men) Championship 2014-15 at the Swami Vivekanand Group of Institutes today.

The University of Jammu defeated Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, 81-63 in the inaugural match of the North Zone Inter-University Basketball (Men) Championship 2014-15 at the Swami Vivekanand Group of Institutes today.

In other matches, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, defeated Amity University, Gurgaon, 84-32, while Deenbandhu Chotu Ram, Murthal, defeated MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly, 44-10.

Players from as many as 53 universities, affiliated with the Punjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar, are participating in the championship.

Former Olympian Sukhbir Singh Gill, after inaugurating the championship, addressed the participants and stressed on the need to promote and organise sports in Punjab on a large scale so as to divert youth from falling into the web of drugs.

The guest of honour, Deepinder Singh Dhillon, Ashwani Garg, chairman of the group, and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
