Two minor girls were washed away on Wednesday in flash floods that occurred here after heavy rain lashed the region, causing massive waterlogging in several parts.

The rain also triggered landslides on the Jammu-Srinagar highway near Seri in Ramban district, blocking the road. The traffic, however, was restored on the highway after the authorities cleared the debris at around 1.30 pm.

Amarnath yatra was also allowed to proceed towards Kashmir from Jammu base camp.

“Around 10.30 am, two girls got washed way due to flash floods in Janipur area. One of the deceased has been identified as Meenakshi (9) of Janipur. The identity of the second girl is yet to be ascertained,” Simrandeep Singh, Deputy Commissioner Jammu said.

He said the bodies had been kept in mortuary of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu for legal formalities.

“The administration has announced Rs 4 lakh each under State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to the families of the deceased,” he added.

Meanwhile, massive waterlogging impeded traffic in various parts of the winter capital while there were reports of damage to houses in rural parts of the region.
