New Delhi, February 23

Notwithstanding the old ties between the Badals and the Chautalas, the SAD on Thursday accused the INLD of stoking regional chauvinism and hatred among the people of Punjab and Haryana by undertaking a march to dig the SYL canal.

Akali MP Prem Singh Chandumajra said: “What the INLD has done is not in the interests of both states.”

On his party’s association with the INLD in the past, Chandumajra said: “The SAD will never compromise Punjab’s interests.”

“The Supreme Court directive on the construction of the canal to carry water from Punjab’s rivers to Haryana is illogical, impractical and unacceptable,” he said.

The SAD reiterated its demand that the Centre should set up an independent statutory institution for a time-bound resolution of such disputes on the basis of the riparian principle and optimum usage of riverwaters. — TNS
