Srinagar, January 16

A faction of the Hurriyat Conference today welcomed the decision of Mirpur University to confer a doctorate upon Syed Ali Geelani.

The separatist faction said the doctorate was an “appreciation of his literary work” and the recognition of “his sacrifices and lifelong services for the freedom movement of Jammu and Kashmir”.

“We consider this a precious prize and honour for the whole nation and it has infused a new lease of life in the ongoing freedom movement,” Geelani’s spokesperson Ayaz Akbar said in a statement issued here today.

The chancellor of PoK-based Mirpur University, Sardar Masood Ahmad Khan, has conferred an honorary doctorate upon Geelani.

Due to non-availability of travel documents, Geelani could not attend the event and instead, a representative of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Ghulam Muhammad Safi, received the doctorate on his behalf, Akbar said. — TNS
