Moga/Mansa, July 23

Two farmers allegedly committed suicide after they failed to repay their debt.

A 42-year-old debt-riddden farmer consumed some poisonous substance at Wadda Ghar village of Baghapurana sub-division in the district today. Sukhmandar Singh owed Rs7 lakh to the local cooperative society and a commission agent. He was under pressure to repay the loan amount.

He owned just 2 acres of land. Earlier, he would take land on lease, but due to crop loss in two seasons, he did not take more land on lease this year. His wife Jasvir Kaur said he was under depression for the past few months.

In another incident, Balwinder Singh (27) of Fatehpur village in Mansa, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself by a tree in his fields on Thursday. He was allegedly under pressure due to heavy debt.

The victim owed Rs4 lakh to banks, village cooperative and arhtiyas. BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) leader Ram Singh Bhaini Bagha said Balwinder's cotton crop was damaged last year following which his financial condition worsened.
