Hisar, February 5

While the state government is elated over remarkable improvement in the child sex ratio (CSR), the data presented by the health Department in Hisar has raised suspicion about the authenticity of the claim.

The Deputy Commissioner has called a meeting for the implementation of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ project here today. Dr JS Grewal, Civil Surgeon, gave a presentation about the month-wise comparative figures of the sex ratio, which claimed CSR of 923 girls per 1,000 boys in the district for 2015, while the district administration had put this at 886 girls per 1,000 boys to the state Health Department recently.

The Civil Surgeon’s report stated that the CSR in 2014 was 878:1000, thus claiming an improvement of 45 points. DC Chander Shekhar Khare, however, recalled the earlier figure while questioning the data of the Civil Surgeon.

The DC said he had directed the Civil Surgeon to submit a clarification over different sets of the CSR figures. He, however, said the district had registered an improvement of about eight points in 2015 compared to 2014.

The Civil Surgeon, however, claimed that it was mathematical mistake by his staff while compiling the report. “There was some error in calculating the average as the total points of the newborn girls was divided by 10 instead of 12 months. This led to the error,” he clarified, while adding that exact CSR is 893:1000.
