Shimla, April 21

Ending uncertainty over the use of red, amber and beacon lights atop vehicles of dignitaries, the Himachal Government today issued a notification whereby only Chief Justice of Himachal High Court and the judges have been allowed use of these status symbols.

The notification issued by the Transport Department today stated that in supersession of all the previous notifications issued from time to time, in pursuance of the powers conferred under clause (iii) of proviso to sub rule (1) of Rule 108 of the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1989, the use of red, amber and blue has been withdrawn.

However, the notification said that, henceforth, the use of these beacon lights atop vehicles of all dignitaries, except Chief Justice and Judges of the High Court, is withdrawn. Taking the cue, many politicians, including MLAs, removed beacons from their vehicles. However, the bureaucracy is showing maximum reluctance in shedding these status symbol. — TNS
