Haryana, Punjab to go to polls on June 12

NEW DELHI, May 10 — Punjab and Haryana will go to the polls on June 12 and Himachal Pradesh on June 10 to elect their respective State Assemblies, the Election Commission of India announced today.

The elections will be held between June 10 and June 14 in 10 States and two Union Territories, including the Metropolitan Council of Delhi.

There will be one-day polling in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Delhi and Pondicherry. Elections will spread over two days in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu and three days in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Delhi will go to the polls on June 12, Orissa on June 10, Pondicherry on June 14, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on June 10 and 13, West Bengal on June 11 and 14, Tamil Nadu on June 12 and 14 and Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on June 10, 12 and 14.

The last date for filing nominations for all the State Assemblies and Union Territories has been fixed for May 18. Scrutiny will take place on May 19 and withdrawals on May 21.

The bye-elections to fill nine vacancies in the Gujarat Assembly will be held on June 10.

SHIMLA: (Samachar) — Polling in the remaining three segments of the Mandi Parliamentary constituency, including Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti will be held simultaneously with the Assembly elections on June 10 on the basis of old electoral rolls, the Adviser to the Himachal Governor, Mr N J Kamath told Samachar here today.

These segments were earlier scheduled to go to the polls on May 24.

According to a report from Kalpa, the tribesmen of the border district of the Kinnaur will for the first time (since the inception of Himachal Pradesh) cast their votes under the marking system, in the Assembly elections on June 10, it was officially stated.

As many as 26,680 voters will exercise their franchise at 79 polling stations for both the Assembly and the deferred Mandi Parliamentary seat elections.

A rehearsal of polling officers was held at the district headquarters today. Similar rehearsals will soon be held at sub-divisional headquarters.
