Hisar, April 5

A Dalit groom was thrashed, allegedly by a group of upper-caste youth, as he was riding a mare to reach the bride’s place at Sanjarwas village of Charkhi Dadri district on Tuesday night.

The groom, Sanjay Kumar, hailing from Dhani Rivasa village, and some other members of the marriage party were taken to hospital. The marriage ceremony was later performed under police security.

According to information, the marriage party was on its way to the bride’s place when some villagers stopped them, allegedly objecting to the groom riding a mare. This led to a scuffle between the two groups and the local villagers allegedly thrashed the groom and other members of the marriage party.

The police was deployed in the village on Tuesday night and the groom was taken back to the village from the hospital to perform the wedding rituals. Sarpanch Vikash Singh said some unscrupulous elements tried to create a ruckus; he denied any caste conflict in the village.
