Haridwar MC periphery areas lack proper drainage

A delegation led by BJP divisional president Kamani Sadana met Chief Town Commissioner Nupur Verma here today and apprised her about open drains, ineffective sewer system and pot-holed roads in various colonies in the Municipal Corporation periphery.

Kamani said in the past few years, local residents and traders had suffered damage and losses during the monsoon due to open nullahs and an improper drainage system. The civic body should take immediate steps to ensure the situation doesn’t arise again.

“Cleaning of nullahs and covering of open drains are vital. Though cemented coverings can’t be done during the rainy season, garbage, filth and stuck material should be removed regularly. Residents and pilgrims suffer due to water-logging, which mainly happens due to open nullahs and uncovered drains,” said Mahendra Singh Bisht, a trader in Shiv Moorti-Shravannath Nagar.

Trader leaders Mridul Kaushik and Priya Vrat Gupta said the Municipal Corporation should immediately provide additional sanitation employees and nullah gang members and specifically task them with cleaning nullahs.

Ward councillors Rajesh Sharma, Vandana Gupta and Raj Kumar also met Nupur, who assured them of directing the officials concerned and employees in this regard.

Meanwhile, Jwalapur residents expressed their resentment against poor sanitation and cleanliness in their locality. Led by BJP activists, the residents complained that despite repeated requests the Municipal Town Commissioner had failed to address the civic issues of the suburban locality. Social activist Janvindra Chauhan said the situation was equally bad in the main Jwalapur area, Kathaira Bazaar, Mohalla Kassaban, Kotarwan, Ehbab Nagar, Indra Basti, Suraj Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Bakra Market and Maidaniyan.

Local resident Munshi Ram said they would launch an agitation if the problems of the locality were not addressed in the coming days.
