Guv: Thourough study of tremors in hill dists needed

Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul has underlined a need for a thorough study on 52 tremors felt by certain hill districts of Uttarkhand in the past three years in the aftermath of massive Nepal earthquake.

The Governor was addressing the inaugural session of the three-day national seminar on Earth System Science with Special Reference to Himalaya on Wednesday that is part of Golden Jubilee celebrations of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun.

“In the aftermath of massive Nepal earthquake, 52 tremors particularly in the hill districts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh have been felt in the last three years. This need to be studied thoroughly as it is important to know of its long run repercussions”, he said. He also suggested adoption of techniques of construction that would minimise the effects of earthquakes.

Asserting that past historical records say that Uttarakhand region was bestowed with enormous mineral wealth, he called upon scientists engaged in study of earth sciences to conduct surveys in districts like Pithoragarh that could have resources like copper, silver and even gold. He said even old gazetteers mention about mineral deposits in places like Joshimath.

The Governor also called for judicious utilisation of water. “We need to adopt agricultural techniques that use less water. It is important that water is utilized properly and no wastage of water should be allowed”, he said. 

He also favoured a comprehensive scientific study of glaciers. It was believed that the melting of glaciers was due to global warming. “This should be studied. Also, the effects of forest fires on glaciers should be studied”, he added.

Earlier, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology’s Director Dr Meera Tiwari informed the gathering about the rich history of the institute. He said it was matter of honour that the institute was celebrating its Golden Jubilee in the current year.

A large number of researches and scientists from across the country are taking part in the conference.
