The Municipal Corporation (MC) has installed the global positioning system (GPS) on the garbage lifting vehicles to keep a check on the lifting of garbage in the city and the working of the employees

“Garbage lifting involves a lot of money. Monitoring the vehicles used for lifting the garbage is a very difficult work and requires monitoring. That’s why we have made use of the GPS,” said Sumedha Kataria, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation.

“We are receiving complaints regarding non-lifting of garbage from various parts of the city, so it became necessary for us to keep a track on its functioning,” she said.

“We have installed vehicle tracking system in over 25 vehicles, including dumper, tractor-trailers and JCBs involved in garbage lifting,” the Commissioner said.

She further said the MC had to provide over 90 MT of garbage to the solid waste management plant daily. The effective lifting would contribute to fulfilling the target. About the expenditure on the project, she said they had incurred Rs 6,200 per equipment. The system would help them keep an eye on the moment of vehicles, kilometres covered by each vehicle, route they were plying on, stoppages and time taken for the lifting work. It would also reduce the complaints of non-lifting of the garbage.

She said they had 540 sweepers for the cleanliness drive, while there was a shortage of over 250. However, instead of appointing new sweepers, they would initiate night cleaning on outsourcing. For this, they would approach traders to clean their establishments before closing them.
