Govt okays Rs 30 crore for Chamba Medical College

The government yesterday released Rs 30 crore for undertaking construction works on the building complex of Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College (JNGMC), Chamba, Principal Prof Anil Ohri said here today.

Prof Ohri said the blueprints for the buildings proposed to be constructed on the outskirts of Chamba town had already been submitted to the government while the process for tendering of construction works was in progress. On the persuasion of Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur, all the works of JNGMC were under way, he said.

“Since Chamba area lacks multi-speciality health facilities, there is possibility of setting up a medical college. Chamba Deputy Commissioner Sudesh Mokhta is making efforts to accomplish ongoing works of JNGMC,” Prof Ohri said.

As far as the recruitment of specialized faculty of JNGMC was concerned, Prof Ohri informed that by now 28 dioctors had joined which prominently included Dr.Aditya for Ophthalmology department, Radiologist and Gynecologist as per the norms laid by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

In addition to this, six causality medical officers had also been appointed to smoothen emergency work of JNGMC, Prof Ohri said, adding that almost all the requisite formalities conforming to the norms of the MCI had been completed.

Prof Ohri said nearly 70 per cent renovation work of lecture halls, faculty rooms, libraries and museum on the premises of old Government Degree College at Akhandchandi Palace had already been completed. There would be six libraries and one museum in the college, he added.

Prof Ohri said the building would be used as a stopgap arrangement till the new building of the medical college was not constructed at Sarol near the town.

He said the existing regional hospital after becoming part of the medical college would have a capacity of 500 beds. Six doctors would be available round the clock, he said.

The college would have 21 departments. Out of them, 11 would provide medical services to patients, Prof Ohri said, adding that over 600 nursing, laboratory and other staff would also be part of the medical college staff.
