Mussoorie, May 26

Residents of the Landour Cantonment Board area are irked at the disposal of garbage collected from households at a plot near Mullingar. They fear an epidemic may spread in the town.

Earlier, the Mussoorie Municipal Council used to collect garbage from the area but the practice was discontinued following differences between MC president Manmohan Singh Mall and vice-president, Landour Cantonment Board, Mahesh Chand over the allotment of the Kholhukhet eco-tax barrier to private parties.

Notably, Mahesh Chand had openly opposed the move and staged a dharna at the Municipal Council office a few days ago. Irked at the behaviour of Mahesh Chand, Mall has discontinued garbage collection from the board area, thereby causing inconvenience to residents. The Landour Cantonment Board was forced to collect garbage from the area under its jurisdiction and dump it at a temporary site near Mullingar, which still continues.

The affected people have demanded that garbage be dumped at a secluded place instead of Mullingar.

They said if the exercise was not discontinued at the earliest, people would fall victim to epidemics.

On the other hand, officials of the Landour Cantonment Board said they were working towards resolving the issue and find a permanent solution.

Local resident Sunil Panwar said political impasse had affected garbage disposal and residents of the town hard. The authorities concerned must immediately find out a solution to the problem.
