Panic gripped Sultanwind area this evening when notorious gangster Bobby Malhotra and his accomplice opened fire on their rivals, killing one. The shootout took place a few yards from Division B police station.

Senior police officials, including Police Commissioner Amar Singh Chahal, DCP J Elanchezhian and personnel from various police stations reached the spot.

Those who sustained bullet injuries were Hariya, Deepu and Sunny. They were rushed to private hospitals. Hariya who was reportedly shot in the head succumb to his injuries. The condition of Deepu and Sunny was stable.

Malhotra of Sonu Kangla gang and his accomplices had kidnapped and killed Karanbir dead on March 29 as he was a member of the Hariya gang. His body was found in Sarhali area of Tarn Taran yesterday.

Sources said Malhotra and his gang members chased Hariya and his two accomplices from the 100-feet road before shooting them at Sultanwind road chowk near the police station.

Hariya was stuck in a traffic jam where he was reportedly surrounded and shot by Malhotra. The assailants managed to escape from spot.

Mani, brother of Hariya, who took him to the hospital, told the cops that Hariya and the others were returning after attending the marriage of his cousin in a palace located on Tarn Taran Road when the accused struck.

He said after shooting the victims, Bobby and his accomplices, who were chasing the victims on motorcycles fled in a car fitted with a red beacon.

The incident has raised a question mark on the functioning of the police since Bobby was openly moving in the city looking for Hariya.

Chahal said that investigations were underway and the incident was the result of a gang war. The police were scanning CCTV footage in the area. However, he neither confirmed nor denied that the accused used an Alto car fitted with a red bacon to escape from the spot.
