Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s condolence message was read out during Punjabi writer Gurdial Singh’s bhog ceremony here today.

He said Gurdial Singh gave a new direction to Punjabi literature, capturing the humiliation and discontent in the lives of the downtrodden. The message was read out by Gurbhej Singh Guraya, general secretary, Punjabi Academy, New Delhi.

Paying homage to the Punjabi writer, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sadhu Singh remembered his 29-year-long association with Gurdial Singh as a teacher at Brijindra College, Faridkot.

He said AAP, if voted to power in Punjab, would set up a chair in Gurdial Singh’s name.

Others who paid tributes to Gurdial Singh included Jagroop Singh, secretariat member, CPI; Mangat Ram Pasla, general secretary, CPM; and Sukhdev Singh Sirsa, president, Punjabi Sahit Akademi.

Members of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) were also present.
