In a daring daylight robbery, three persons entered the house of former Panipat Mayor and present councillor from ward No. 11 Bhupinder Singh and took him hostage at gunpoint here today. They robbed him of jewellery, cash, two mobile phones and other valuables.

However, thanks to Bhupinder’s maid Bharti, who jumped from the roof and raised the alarm, that the robbers were forced to flee, leaving him at home.

The police have registered a case against three persons and released their photographs as captured in the CCTV cameras installed at the house. They have also announced a cash reward for information about the accused.

Bhupinder said he had returned home around 3 pm after having a round of his ward. Meanwhile, two persons came to him for some work and when he asked them to sit they called their third accomplice, who closed the door of the house.

“Two of them had pistols while one was carrying a knife. They pointed the weapons at me and my maid,” he added. “They snatched my two mobile phones and some money and searched all rooms in the house. They took three gold rings and some cash from my mother’s almirahs. Meanwhile, my maid showed courage and jumped from the roof and shouted for help. Seeing the maid escape, the trio fled the house,” he said.

DSP (headquarters) Jagdeep Singh along with forensic experts visited Bhupinder’s house and assured him that the accused would be arrested soon.

“The incident took place between 3 pm and 3.18 pm. A case has been registered against three persons,” he added. The broad daylight incident has exposed the law and order situation in the industrial city.
