Chand Kaur, 88, wife of Namdhari leader late Satguru Jagjit Singh, died after being shot by two motorcycle-borne assailants in Bhaini Sahib on Monday.

She was rushed to SPS Hospital, near Sherpur Chowk here, in a critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

According to Lakhvir Singh, PRO of Bhaini Sahib, Chand Kaur had suffered two bullet injuries — one in the head and another in the abdomen.

The incident took place around 10 am when she was visiting an educational institution along with her driver on an electronic golf cart.

Suddenly, two unidentified motorcycle-borne persons intercepted the vehicle and the pillion rider opened fire at Chand Kaur.

According to the cart driver, five shots were fired at her. He added that soon after opening the fire, the assailants managed to flee the spot on their bike.

Hearing the shots, people rushed to the spot and found Chand Kaur lying in a pool of blood. They rushed her to the hospital and informed the police about the incident.

Heavy police force has been deployed in Bhaini Shaib following the incident. A massive combing operation has been launched in Bhaini Sahib, Machhiwara, Samrala, Khanna and nearby places to nab the assailants.

The PRO said Chand Kaur was facing threats but she had refused to take the security cover offered by the police.

Chand Kaur was involved in a controversy after she had appointed Thakur Uday Singh as the next sect head following the death of her husband Jagjit Singh in 2012. A faction led by Dalip Singh, elder brother of Uday Singh, had opposed the move.
