Forestry improves status of poor: FRI

Dr Savita, Director of the Forest Research Institute (FRI), has laid emphasis on the importance of role of forestry towards the betterment of socio-economic status of rural poor.

She inaugurated a short term training on plantation technology organised for the personnel of Indian Farm Forestry Development Cooperative Limited (IFFDC), Gurgaon, at the FRI today. She said the IFFDC was doing a commendable work on afforestation and development of wasteland through tree plantation.

She said tree plantation was also contributing towards enhancing the socio-economic status of rural poor through sustainable natural resource management by collective action of the society.

Dr Neelu Gera, head of the Silviculture division, said the participants would be benefited from such courses and gain knowledge from the scientific inputs on various aspects which would be applied to practices in the field. She said more emphasis was being given to practical exposure in nursery and plantation activities. The training module includes the techniques of seed technology, nursery and plantation techniques of important tree species.

IFFDC project manager RK Dwivedi threw light on various plantation activities of the IFFDC in stakeholder states in the country. As many as 26 personnel of the IFFDC from UP, MP, Rajasthan, Orissa and West Bengal are participating in the three-day training programme.
