Sangrur, December 24

Hundreds of farmers and labourers began a dharna for an indefinite period outside the district administrative complex (DC office) in Sangrur today.

They were expressing resentment with the administration as there has been no consensus with officials over their demands with regard to the death of a farmer.

Darshan Singh (55) of Sadopur village (near Malerkotla) had consumed poison on December 19 at a dharna near Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa’s residence here and later died at Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

Due to the non-fulfillment of all four demands of the unions, they have not been allowing the authorities to conduct the post-mortem examination of the deceased. State president of BKU (Ugrahan) Joginder Singh Ugrahan said they were demanding the waiver of loan of the deceased farmer, Rs 10 lakh as compensation, government job for his son, besides the registration of a case against the persons who forced Darshan to commit suicide.
