Farmers’ challenges discussed at PAU alumni meet

LUDHIANA: The second day of the alumni meet at Punjab Agricultural University started with a session on ‘Emerging challenges for farming families: Role of basic sciences and humanities’ by Journalism Professor Sarabjeet Singh.

The second day of the alumni meet at Punjab Agricultural University started with a session on ‘Emerging challenges for farming families: Role of basic sciences and humanities’ by Journalism Professor Sarabjeet Singh.

The session was followed by a talk on ‘highlighting the gap between the public and government schools and ways to address it’ by Surinder Bir Singh, an alumnus of the college.

He pointed how commercialisation of education was responsible for adding to the stress of the farming community. Later, alumnus and ex-Dean, APS Mann, talked about education and drug abuse, while laying stress on the economic and social pressures faced by the farmers.

The proceedings of the day were conducted by SS Hundal, Professor and Head of Department of Zoology. Hundal told about the registration of the Association of Basic Sciences and Humanities Alumni (ABHA) on August 31, 2016. It was decided unanimously at the General Body meeting that the executive members would continue to hold office for the next one year. Vice-Chancellor BS Dhillon is the patron, while GK Sangha, Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, is the president. Dr Parampal Sahota, Head of the Department of Microbiology, is the vice-president. Dr Nirmaljeet from the Department of Botany is the joint secretary.

Later, distinguished alumni of the college and the sponsors of the event were honoured.
