Farm varsity develops new poultry breed

PALAMPUR: Dr KK Katoch, Vice-Chancellor, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, while addressing around 30 district-level officers from different departments, scientists and progressive farmers disclosed that the university had developed a new strain of poultry which lays on an average about 150 eggs in a year under the backyard poultry production system.

Dr KK Katoch, Vice-Chancellor, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, while addressing around 30 district-level officers from different departments, scientists and progressive farmers disclosed that the university had developed a new strain of poultry which lays on an average about 150 eggs in a year under the backyard poultry production system.

He said this strain had been developed by crossing of a dual purpose Dahlem Red breed with native birds of the state and had proved suitable under backyard poultry farming under local agro-climatic condition. He asked the members to motivate farmers to adopt backyard poultry farming to raise their economic and nutritional status.

He said it was imperative to judiciously use all natural resources and laid emphasis on water conservation. Dr Katoch said Nadaun area was known for vegetable production and the university would solve the newly emerged problems for farmers of this area. He also spoke on the importance of crop insurance, soil health cards and agricultural marketing. — OC
