In the first session, guest speaker Prof Mangla Rai, who is the Vice Chancellor of GB Pant University, spoke on climate change and management of natural resources and threw light on global, national and local aspects in this context.

He said the ecosystem should be strengthened through knowledge and science and good results could be achieved by proper natural resource management.

Prof Mangla Rai said organic methods along with scientific methods in agricultural should be adopted to increase the soil fertility. He said available resources were less while the population was increasing and this was a cause for concern.

Dr Ajay Rawat , an expert on Himalayan environment , spoke on environment and development. He presented a slideshow on the biodiversity in the Himalayas and gave a detailed talk on the rich biodiversity of the region.

Rawat made efforts to make students sensitive towards nature. He said many civilisations of the world had vanished but India’s Ganga –Yamuni culture was alive due to forests. The source of civilisation and culture lies in Uttarakhand where forests are a way of life.
