Chief Minister Harish Rawat today said increasing productivity of agriculture land and maintaining the basic qualities of soil was a huge challenge.

He was speaking after inaugurated a workshop on ‘Green agriculture-transforming Indian agriculture for global environmental benefits’ at the Secretariat here.

“Organic farming formed a big part of the state’s agriculture tradition. Now, organic methods are also being adopted at places where modern farming was undertaken earlier as organic products have a high demand across the globe,” he said.

He hoped that organic farming would be promoted on the banks of the Ganga and Yamuna with help from the Central government.

The state government had made provisions to grant bonus for plantation and rainwater harvesting in spite of the state’s limited resources, he said.

Rawat added considering the contribution of Uttarakhand to providing environmental services, he expected the Central Government to provide resources considering it a green state.

The workshop organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation aimed at conserving critical agriculture and forest biodiversity in different landscapes.
