Solan, January 24

An elephant that had strayed into the state’s boundary from the neighbouring Uttarakhand was found dead at Bahral village in Paonta Sahib area of Sirmaur district this morning. This is the first case of an elephant death in the state and the officials of the Forest Department had little expertise to ascertain the cause of its death.

Confirming the news, DFO SS Rana said Range Officer, Majra, Gian Chand rushed to the spot on receiving this information in the morning and he found the animal lying dead in the fields.

Veterinary experts were also called to examine the animal but since they had little expertise in dealing with an elephant, wildlife experts from the Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India had been called. They would conduct a postmortem of the animal tomorrow.
