A man’s death due to absence of doctors in Civil Hospital, Jaitu, led to a protest here today with residents and relatives of the deceased blocking the Bathinda-Kotkapura state highway.

Shashi Kumar (30), a painter, was rushed to the hospital late last evening after he was electrocuted. As there was no doctor on emergency duty, the paramedical staff in the hospital asked the victim’s family to take him to Kotkapura or Bathinda. Shashi died on the way to Kotkapura Civil Hospital.

His family claimed that the paramedical staff at Jaitu hospital did not bother to give him any primary medical aid. Against five sanctioned posts, four specialists and one medical officer, the Jaitu Civil Hospital has only two full-time doctors, a gynaecologist and a medicine doctor. Two MBBS doctors Bajakhana have additional charge of the Jaitu hospital.

To pacify the protestors, senior police and civil officers and doctors from Kotkapura rushed to Jaitu and the blockage was lifted after over five hours. — TNS
