Dehradun, June 22

Octogenarian GD Agarwal, known as Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanan, on Friday launched an indefinite fast at Matra Sadan, Haridwar, seeking the intervention of the Prime Minister and the Union Water Resources Minister in saving the Ganga.

He is demanding that work on the Vishnugad Pipalkoti, Singoli Bhawari and Phata Byung hydroelectric projects be stopped, the passing of the Draft Ganga Protection Act and the creation of a national Ganga follower committee, whose permission will be necessary before initiating any work in the vicinity of the river.

He alleged that the Central Government’s Namami Gange project had failed to check the flow of drains into the Ganga.
