Former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said by abolishing the use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not only succeeded in bringing out black money but also strengthen economy of the country.

He was addressing a seminar of members of Panchyati Raj Institutions (PRI’s) organised by the Zila Parishad chairman to educate members of PRIs of their duties and powers.

He said PRIs were the final executing authority but the state government was trying to undermine their importance. He said it was during the BJP regime that the state reserved 50 per cent seats for women and became the first state in the country to adopt this reservation system.

Dhumal said the BJP would restore powers to zila parishad and block development committees once it would assume power in the state.

Detailing the duties and powers of members of PRIs, Rakesh Thakur, chairman of zila parishad, said every member of PRIs had been empowered under the PRI Act and they should exercise their powers for faster development of areas, including wards and panchayats.

The seminar was attended by over 1,000 members of PRIs.
