Can one person save the planet? The environmentalists have always screamed yes; while the cynics have shrugged it with disbelief. If that ‘one person’ starts with the rich and the famous and trickles down to you and we…yes, one person can save the planet. Here’s how.

Simple steps go a long way

For the cause, not applause

Dia Mirza: In a recently released video, Dia urges us to inculcate the 5 R’s – Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Repair and Refuse – in our lives. The extremely simple and doable solutions mentioned in the video only require little dedication at our end.

Zareen Khan: The actress recently expressed her views and urged the audiences to take small steps. She said, “If not now, then when? If not us, then who?

John Abraham: The actor set up India’s first elephant village in Maharashtra. He says, “It is not the first time that I have stood up for the cause of animals. I have acted similarly in the case of monkeys, stray dogs and bears. It is sad to see majestic elephants begging on the road.”

Amitabh Bachchan: He recently spoke up about how we collectively should become aware of our deteriorating environment. He tweeted, “When you go under the sea, you protect your ground from destruction.” He has also been a part of ‘Save Our Tigers’ campaign.

Harshvardhan Rane: The actor’s ‘Save Water’ poster during the festival of Holi, where he was covered in cracked mud, symbolic of barren land due to water scarcity, had garnered a lot of attention. The actor said, “The idea was to convey that barren lands are becoming a reality. Imagine the Earth going dry. So even if a handful of people decide to have a water-less Holi, I think it’s worth the effort.”

Shorter showers, closed taps

Imagine if everybody in a country of a billion did that? “We all do talk about pollution and dirt, but trying to keep these things in control is what we can do. Start by not littering the streets! Not wasting water as well. I definitely am doing my bit in that case. Not keeping the tap on while brushing, I have also reduced my shower timings majorly.  I feel that influential people can start these movements, which will surely set an example for other people.” — Kunwar Amarjeet Singh, television actor

Put off charger points, switches

I make it a point to use minimum water and not waste electricity. We have to start from somewhere. I make sure to put off all the switches and charger points once I am done using them. Just talking about World Environment Day isn’t enough; doing something to preserve our surroundings is what actually counts. I feel if influential people do their bit by taking initiatives to conserve the surroundings, people will follow. — Asha Negi, TV actress

Follow these celebs, learn a thing or two

Save the rainforests, oceans

Pamela Anderson: From the poster girl of bikini to a champion of causes, Pamela Anderson is a star in the true spirit. She showed concern on April 2016 being the hottest on record and the seventh month in a row to break global temperature records. And re-tweeted about ‘India’s dying mother: Can the River Ganges be saved?’ The animal rights activist often tweets for the oceans, the Earth, the rainforests.

Do you know what’s fracking?

Mark Ruffalo: The Incredible Hulk, is out to do his bit and spread the word on environment. The actor’s often been vocal of his political opinions too. Whether it’s his tweet, “We could be on the verge of taking down Monsanto’s poisonous chemical empire.” Or his constant battle against fracking (the controversial process of extracting oil and gas).

Not just carbon, reduce your water footprint

Alicia Silverstone: The actress-turned-author and animal rights activist often tweets and raises concerns for animals, all the while backing it up with statistics like how going vegetarian reduces water footprint by almost 60 per cent.
