The district administration will soon set up ‘electronic-toilet facility’ for students with visual impairment and partial visual impairment at the Braille Bhawan on the Chandigarh Road.
The ‘e-toilet’ would be fully automated and is expected to be much more convenient for the visually impaired.
The toilet unit would be shiftable and would not require any touching of buttons for cistern, etc. by users.
According to information, the e-toilet unit would have sensors, and would release water for cleaning purpose automatically after every use.
The lights would also be turned on and off automatically. The amount of water released for flushing the toilet would also be variable, according to the time one uses it.
These would be unmanned, automated, with prewash and post wash facilities and would remain stench free.
After around 10 persons use the toilet, the entire unit, including the floor, would be completely washed without requiring anybody to clean it.
Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat said: “The e-toilet will be a relief to the visually impaired students, as these will work automatically and remain clean always. These will thus be easier as well as hygienic to use.”
He said initially, there would be three units, one for males, one for females and another for the physically handicapped persons.
“The original cost of the unit is very high, but we have asked the manufacturer to bring down the cost by removing features we don’t need including use of mobile app, etc.,” he said.
Paramjit Kaur, Principal at Braille Bhawan, said it would be highly beneficial for the visually impaired students on the campus.
Another employee said the district administration was taking measures to improve the lives of the visually impaired students.
“After the decision to make sensor-based smart classrooms for students by the district administration, the e-toilet facility is another welcome step as it will end the dependence of manual cleaning,” he said.
