Driver gets 1-yr jail for girl’s death

SRINAGAR: A court in Pulwama has convicted a driver for rash and negligent driving and awarded him a one-year jail term.

A court in Pulwama has convicted a driver for rash and negligent driving and awarded him a one-year jail term.

The conviction has, however, come after eight-year-long trial, the JK Police said in a statement today.

The Additional Special Mobile Magistrate, Awantipora, Fozia Paul, today convicted Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Bhat, hailing from Renizipora, Awantipora, for causing death of a pedestrian girl, namely Yasmeena Akhter, daughter of Mohammad Ramzan from Reshipora, Awantipora, while he was driving a TATA Sumo vehicle. Another girl, Mubeena, hailing from the same village, was also injured in the accident.

The court convicted Bhat for negligent and rash driving when he had hit the girls while driving the Tata Sumo vehicle on December 12, 2007, at Beigpora, Awantipora.

The court awarded him an imprisonment for one year and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 also on him.

The convict has been ordered to be lodged in the Central Jail, Srinagar.
