The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti has stressed on the need for ensuring good health (both physical and mental) of the students studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) across the state.

The apex body made it clear that no illness of any child was to be taken casually and medicines given should be recorded in a register to keep a proper track of the recovery of the students.

Sources claimed that a majority of the JNVs were located in far flung districts of the state. They added that the instructions were given to the vidyalayas after it came to the fore that despite having medical staff at its disposal, some cases of illness of students went unnoticed.

The schools have been told to keep the ill students under the supervision of a staff nurse or a teacher. Further, the headmasters have also been asked to ensure that the child is being provided medical treatment properly.

“After giving the first-aid treatment to the child, the vidyalaya doctor should be consulted always. In absence of the vidyalaya doctor (if found not available at that time), a qualified doctor of the nearby health centre/hospital should be consulted,” a statement said.

Sources said in those cases, where the illness of the student could not be diagnosed immediately, clear instructions were given to the vidyalayas to not to delay the treatment and immediately shift the child to a nearby government hospital for further examination.

“The vidyalayas have also been asked to conduct the full medical check-up of the students quarterly. Not only that, a special diet chart should be provided to ill students as per the recommendations of the doctor. Moreover, regular mosquito eradication measures are also been taken by the management,” a JNV official claimed.

“In fact, personal hygiene of mess workers and conditions in the kitchen and mess are being checked by the vidyalaya doctor at least once in a quarter after the directions by the samiti. Adequate care is also being taken with regard to drinking water, which is properly purified/ chlorinated before using for drinking purpose, which otherwise was neglected in some vidyalayas,” he added.
