The demonetisation has helped in filling coffers of the Urban Local Bodies Department as various district authorities have received Rs 30.55 crore so far. The amount will increase further as details of some districts are yet to be compiled.

Sources said that immediately after the announcement of demonetisation on November 8, residents started queuing up to deposit their scrapped notes in offices of the municipal corporations, councils and committees in the state. “We have been trying to recover outstanding dues for the past long time. The demonetisation has really done wonders as residents themselves came forward to pay their dues. So far, we have received Rs 40.72 lakh,” said an official of the Safidon Municipal Committee.

Sources said the municipal authorities had received Rs 30.55 crore against the last year’s collection of Rs 18.09 crore. As per figures, the Rohtak Municipal Corporation (MC) has received Rs 1.37 crore till date, Karnal Rs 45.42 lakh, Faridabad Rs 16.93 crore, Panipat Rs 2.87 crore, Yamunanagar Rs 2.05 crore and Panchkula Rs 29.49 lakh, while figures from Sonepat, Gurugram, Ambala and Hisar yet to be compiled.

The department also received big amounts from some small towns like Ladwa where the Municipal Committee collected Rs 8.26 lakh during this month, while it had received only Rs 2.07 lakh last year. Charkhi Dadri collected Rs 47 lakh against the last year’s collection of Rs 22.01 lakh, Rewari Rs 50.86 lakh against the last year’s figure of Rs 28.53 lakh and Nissing Rs 64.04 lakh against the last year’s figure of Rs 1.04 lakh.
