Cow activists had a narrow escape as “smugglers” opened fire on them near Chogama village in the district last night.

One person has been arrested while others managed to flee the crime scene.

The police have arrested Aas Mohammad, who had escaped from the PGI, Chandigarh, last year.

Indri SHO Narinder Rana said cow activists from Yamunanagar erected barricades near Chogama village after they came to know that smugglers were travelling to UP from Punjab through the Gharibirbal route.

He said when the activists tried to stop them, smugglers opened fire on them.

The SHO said the vehicle of cow smugglers overturned at a distance of few metres. One of them was caught while other two managed to flee, he added.

A case under Section 307 of the IPC and Arms Act had been registered in this regard. Efforts were on to nab the other accused, he added.
