A head constable of the Batala police was attacked with iron rods on the outskirts of Nathwal village this morning. Harpal Singh, who works in the counter-intelligence wing, sustained head injuries and fractured legs. His aide, Kuldeep Singh, was also injured.

A witness said about a dozen persons got down from four vehicles and asked Harpal to stop his motorcycle. “When he refused, two of them stood in front of his bike. The others started thrashing Harpal and Kuldeep. Leaving the cop for dead, they fled from the spot,” the witness added.

Both were taken to the Batala Civil Hospital.

A case has been registered at Rangar Nangal police station. SSP Daljinder Singh Dhillon ordered a manhunt, following which the village was cordoned off. The main accused has been identified as Vikramjit Vicky.

On a tip-off by Harpal, the police had raided Vicky’s residence in the village a few weeks ago, leading to the recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition.

This is the second incident in recent months in which policemen have been attacked in the district. On May 15, ASI Nirjit Singh was tied to a pole with a rope and thrashed by residents of Gokhuwal village.
