Kurukshetra, December 19

A day after the police alleged a brutal attack on their personnel by a local family, videos of police manhandling the family, including women at Rajinder Nagar locality in the city, emerged on social media on Monday.

At least two video clips went viral on social media networks.

Constable Deep Kumar was suspended and a departmental inquiry was ordered against him.

A woman, Renu, is seen being slapped by a policeman while her younger brother Praveen Kumar is seen dragged, kicked and beaten up by uniformed policemen at their house.

The videos were apparently made by people who had gathered outside victim Satish Kumar Mittal’s residence when the incident took place yesterday.

Mittal (48), an orthopaedic patient, is employed as tubewell operator with Public Health Department.

Pankaj Nain, who has an additional charge of Kurukshetra SP, had asked DSP Noopur Bishnoi to hold an inquiry in the entire episode.

On Sunday, in-charge of the Krishna Gate police post Mahinder Singh had alleged that Mittal and his family had attacked a police party at their residence.

He claimed that Assistant Sub Inspector Satbir Singh visited Mittal’s residence to deliver a court warrant but four members of the family attacked them without any provocation.

Mittal’s eldest son Kuldeep Kumar was allegedly involved in a cheque bounce case and a local court directed him to appear before the court.

Satbir Singh had told mediapersons that three police personnel received injuries after Mittal and his family attacked the police party.

However, Mittal’s family said the policemen beat them up for not paying a bribe.

“Yesterday at around 11 am, an ASI came to handover a court warrant. He wanted a bribe, which my younger brother Praveen refused to pay. The ASI threatened us to get the entire family arrested,” Renu alleged.

“Soon, three more police personnel including the chowki in-charge reached our home and started misbehaving with us. There was no woman cop,” she said.

Requesting anonymity, Mittal’s neighbour claimed that as one of the policeman slapped Renu, the mob outside got agitated and thrashed the accused constable.

“As the mob targeted only one police personnel for misbehaving with Renu, other cops ran away from the spot,” he said.

Subhash Yadav, the Inspector General of Police, Karnal range, said the authorities had taken a serious view of the case and strict action would be initiated for indiscipline.
