Drug peddler gets 9 years in jail

A district court has sentenced a 30-year-old man to nine years of rigorous imprisonment in a drug peddling case.

The convict, Karambir, is a resident of Manimajra. He was arrested by the UT police with one-kg charas at a naka in Mani Majra on July 16, last year.

The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on him.

On the day of arrest, Karambir, was on foot and was carrying a polythene bag. On seeing the police at the naka, he dropped the bag. On searching it, the police found the contraband. He told them that he had sourced the charas from Himachal Pradesh.

While pronouncing the order, the court the charas was possessed by the accused for the purpose of selling it to others.

“Drug menace is eroding the lives of Indian youths. A person responsible for doing so cannot be shown any leniency,” ruled additional district and sessions judge Paramjeet Singh.

No leniency

The UT police had seized one-kg charas from the convict’s possession in July 2013. Showing no leniency to him, additional district and sessions judge Paramjeet Singh awarded him rigourous imprisonment.
