Comfy in his skin

If there is something that he blindly invests his trust in, it is the one sitting up there, the Akaal Purak, as singer Vattan Sandhu would like to address him. He doesn’t believe in connecting the dots, he just believes in going with the flow. “It is too much of a hassle to flow against the current. But, having said that, I take the course my heart asks me to,” smiles the singer, who is now based out in Amritsar. Surprisingly, Vattan’s debut track Lecture got a lot of views. “This is without giving any advertisements,” he adds. His recent track, Dad Vs Son, is climbing the popularity chart. Coming from an illustrious singing background hasn’t made this ‘take-a-chill-pill’ singer any different. “My job is to give my best, the rest…” he points towards the sky. Vattan can shuttle between chaste Punjabi and absolutely neat ‘phoren’ accent, “As and when required,” he flanks a smile.

This is me

I started singing when I was 10. I sang for the first time at my relative’s wedding. I passed the theory and practical for a degree in harmonium at the age of 11; that’s when I knew I just had to sing. My paternal uncle, Devinder Dharia, a well-known music director in England, came to visit us and he told my folks that I would make for a lovely singer, and here I am! I moved to London when I was 18; there I was selected for the British Army, but I decided to return to India to pursue singing.

Fan mail

I am a huge fan of Manmohan Waris.

A singer always

Being a singer is always the first choice. But, if you still ask me what I would be, had I not been a singer, I would have to say, an agriculturist.

My daddy, strongest!

I owe my success to my father, Tejwinder Singh Sandhu, who is in the Punjab police. He has never forced me into anything I didn’t like. It is because of him I am pursuing my passion.

If I’m jammin’

I would like to work with my cousin Pav Dharia and come up with something new soon.

My style, my attitude

I am scared of slipping into a formal suit; I feel tied up! As for my style, it is funky. So, I like wearing loose clothes, something I can breathe in.

Five minutes before the show

I always remember Akaal Purak, I know he has my back and is watching over me.

Fit & fine

I don’t go crazy over fitness. At the same time, I am conscious about not taking my health to extremes.

Foodie?

Yes! I have a personal account running at Dominos. I love pizzas and all sorts of fast food. I am less of a ‘ghar ka khaana’ person.

Five years down the line

As I say, I don’t believe in thinking about what would happen next. If God has brought me here, he will take me forward as well.
