Governor KK Paul today said civil servants have an important role to play in nation building through good governance. “All the problems can be solved if we follow the path of credibility, accountability and transparency,” he said.

Paul addressed IAS officers from various states who received four-week training at the 118th Induction Training Programme (ITP) at the Lal Bahadur National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. The Governor said their transition from the state civil service to the IAS would call upon them to play a bigger role in nation building.

“Citizens have access to instantaneous means of communication nowadays which make the role of civil servants very challenging. This places a huge responsibility on administrative officers to rise up to the challenge to harness the modern technologies to ensure better service delivery,” he said.

According to the Governor, due to a large population, our economic gains are being thinly spread. The geopolitical situation also poses challenges for us as do some of our internal security concerns. In this scenario, the role of a professional, humane and people-centric civil service can be significant. He said, “People expect more from the government not in terms of quantity but quality of governance.”

He quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, “People power must be combined with good governance to bring about real, deep and lasting change. This combination can achieve almost everything from eliminating corruption to ending malnutrition and illiteracy.”

“Maintaining peace, communal amity and industrial peace continues to be as important as it has always been. A conducive atmosphere is very essential for rapid economic growth, especially in the backward areas of the country,” he said. He was confident that the Induction Training Programme had expanded and enhanced the domain of knowledge of officials, he added.
