A Met official said in the years preceeding the past two years, the maximum temperature recorded in December was between 24.8°C and 28.2°C. In the past two years, the maximum temperature recorded was a little over 23°C.

According to the Met Department, nights in the city are colder than Shimla where the minimum temperature was 11°C while in Chandigarh, the minimum temperature recorded today was 9.6°C, three degrees below normal. The minimum temperature recorded in Dharamsala today was 10.4°C while in Nahan, it was 10.7°C.

“It’s the perfect time to take a break in Shimla and beat the biting chill of the plains, where fog often keeps the sun away,” said Siddharth Pandey, a tourist from Delhi. His wife Aamira said: “It’s nice to be in the hills when the fog starts blanketing the plains.”

The visibility due to fog in the morning was 750 metres in the periphery of the city.

Meanwhile, 14 flights were cancelled today while four were delayed due to dense fog in the morning. Three Shatabdi trains and four long-route trains were also delayed.
