City academy win basketball matches

LUDHIANA: The 68th Junior Punjab Basketball Championship began at the Guru Nanak Stadium here today. In all, 36 girls’ and boys’ teams are participating in the championship.

The 68th Junior Punjab Basketball Championship began at the Guru Nanak Stadium here today. In all, 36 girls’ and boys’ teams are participating in the championship.

Players (boys and girls) of the Ludhiana Basketball Academy began their title hunt on a positive note, recording wins in a contrasting fashion. While, boys faced a challenge from the Fazilka district team players whom they drubbed 61-17, academy girls survived a scare from Moga district, wrapping up the issue with a narrow margin 52-44.

Earlier, Gurcharan Singh, chairman of the Gulzar Group of Institutes and a leading sports promoter inaugurated the championship. Senior advocate Harpreet Singh Sandhu presided over the inaugural function.

Yurinder Singh Hayer, DIG, Ludhiana Police Range, who is the Senior Vice-President, Punjab Basketball Association, and Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary General Secretary of the association, hockey Olympians Balvir Singh and Hardeep Singh Grewal, besides Asian Games medalist Nirmal Singh were present.

In other matches, SAS Nagar (Mohali) beat Barnala 40-12 in the boy’s section while in the girl’s category, Ludhiana district trounced Barnala 62-13.
