Chief Secretary BR Sharma today chaired the fourth meeting of the State-Level High Powered Steering Committee on the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

Under AMRUT, the Union Government releases financial assistance to the states to create basic urban infrastructure that shall lead to provision of better services to public. The Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, has allocated a total of Rs 593.05 crore for the AMRUT project in J&K. The state share for the project is 10 per cent. The duration of the project is five years from the financial year 2015-16 to 2019-20.

Presently, five cities or towns in J&K are covered under AMRUT. These are Srinagar, Jammu, Anantnag, Leh and Kargil. The Union Ministry of Urban Development has already approved the State Annual Action Plan (SAAP)- 2016-17 of an amount of Rs 197.33 crore for these cities. The approval of SAAP for Kargil to the tune of Rs 12.80 crore is still being awaited. The committee approved the detailed project reports of various initiatives identified under the SAAP 2016-17.
