Ludhiana: Judicial Magistrate Anoop Singh has convicted two businessmen in cheque-bounce cases. They were awarded one-year jail and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 each. Those convicted are Harbans Singh, Proprietor of M/s GH International, and Gurmeet Singh, Proprietor of M/s Jaswinder Products (India) Gill Road, Ludhiana. The verdict came in two cases filed by Ravinder Pal Singh, owner of M/s Dashmesh Plateyard, Industrial Area B, Ludhiana. According to the complainant, he runs a business of iron plate and scrap. The accused purchased material from him. Harbans issued two cheques for Rs 1,39,038 and Rs 1,64,892 but both bounced due to “account closed”. Gurmeet issued eight cheques against the pending payment of Rs 7,00,817 but all of them bounced due to insufficient funds. The accused claimed the complainant misused their cheques. OC

Snatchers land in police net

Khanna: Two youngsters, who had snatched Rs 2,900 from a petrol station salesman on Tuesday, were arrested at Bardhalan Chowki, under the Samrala police station, on Wednesday. They have been identified as Gurvinder Singh of Amloh and Sukhjot Singh of Bharpoorgarh. Two youngsters, in a car, arrived at newly opened Sri Om Filling Station at Saloudi village and paid Rs 2,900 to a salesman for filling the tank. Soon after giving the money, the youngster, who was sitting on the front passenger’s seat, snatched the money and both sped off. The police spotted the car at a naka near Majra village and arrested both suspects. They were presented before a court that remanded them in police custody for one day. OC 

New District & Sessions Judge 

Ludhiana: Gurbir Singh on Wednesday took over as District and Sessions Judge of Ludhiana. Earlier, he was ADJ, Ludhiana. Vice-president of District Bar Association (DBA) Harjot Singh Harikay, along with other office-bearers, welcomed him. During an interaction with the office-bearers of the DBA, the Sessions Judge assured them of due  respect to the legal fraternity in courts. He sought the cooperation of lawyers in a speedy disposal of cases. Meanwhile, several additional sessions judges also joined here. They include ADJ KS Sullar,  Tarantaran Singh Bindra, Kuldeep Kumar Kareer, Virender Aggarwal, Jasvir Singh Kang, Atul Kasana, Monika Goyal, Amrinder Singh Shergill and Balwinder Kumar-II. Industrial Tribunal Ludhiana’s presiding officer Dilbagh Singh Johal has been posted as ADJ. He replaces ADJ Sandeep Kumar Singla. OC 

Development panel meets  

Ludhiana: A meeting of the district-level Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee was held at the Bachat Bhawan here on Wednesday. Addressing the meeting, Member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu said a pilot project would be launched for each block. He reviewed work under the Pardhan Mantri Sadak Yojana, Mid-day Meal scheme, Swachh Bharat mission and other welfare schemes. The  Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana, Pardeep Aggarwal, said the district had provided employment to a maximum number of youngsters under the MGNREGA scheme. He also reviewed work carried out under the Smart City project.
