Chamba man gets 10-year RI for carrying charas

Chamba: Special Judge Yogesh Jaswal today sentenced Manohar Lal, 59, a resident of Sultanpur village, Chamba district, to undergo 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for possessing 1.3 kg charas.

Special Judge Yogesh Jaswal today sentenced Manohar Lal, 59, a resident of Sultanpur village, Chamba district, to undergo 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for possessing 1.3 kg charas.  

In default of payment of fine, the convict shall further undergo rigorous imprisonment for one year, the court said.  

In a press note issued here, Public Prosecutor Anil Awasthi said on March 31 last year, a police party conducted the search of Amritsar-bound HRTC bus at Parel bridge in Chamba district and the accused got perplexed on seeing the police.   

On checking his belongings, the accused was found with the conscious possession of charas weighing 1.3 kg. Accordingly, a case under Section 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against him at the Chamba police station.  

On concluding of the trial in the court, the court convicted and sentenced the accused to undergo 10-year RI and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for carrying charas.
