Panipat, April 20

A total of 95 houses and around 25 acres were flooded in Israna village of Panipat district following a breach in the Israna distributory canal-9 last night.

The breach occurred last evening and water kept flowing into the village till this morning. A team of the Irrigation Department plugged the breach today and started draining out the water.

Narender Singh of the village, said the breach was noticed at night. He said 25 acres were flooded.

He said around 25 houses in the fields and around 70 houses of ‘Harijan basti’ were flooded.

Jasmer Singh, Preet Singh, Birender, Jaikishan and a number of other villagers said their houses got flooded due to the breach.

Narender said the drain had breached its bank several times in the past, but the department had not taken the matter seriously. The government did not repair the bank of the canal in time, he alleged.

Bijendra Singh, another resident of the village, said, “I was resting with family after dinner. When I came out, water had filled the courtyard. It entered the rooms in a while.”

Raj Singh Punia, SDO (Irrigation), said they had got information about leakage and tried to control the breach. Due to excessive erosion, the situation went out of control, he pointed out.

The breach was plugged today and they started draining out the water from the residential area of the village with the help of pumps, he maintained.
