A Canada-based organisation has launched a million dollar campaign to modernise 20 villages in the state. It will empower women and follow environment friendly practices.

The Indo-Canadian Friendship Society of British Columbia said it would collect 1 million Canadian dollars by the end of the year as part of the initiative.

At a press conference, former Canadian Cabinet minister and society member, Herb Dhaliwal, said the organisation that was headed by Gurdev Gill was already pursuing such work in about 20 villages.

“We will seek matching grants from the Punjab government or the Centre and spend the money on modernising villages,” he said.

He said basic facilities like sewerage, infrastructure, water and solar powered lights would be provided under the initiative.
