Bus drags scooter for 50 metres, 2 killed

CHANDIGARH: An 85-year-old man and a 22-year-old gardener were killed when the Activa scooter they were riding on was hit by a PRTC bus and dragged for around 50 metres at the Sector 46/47/48/49 light point today.

An 85-year-old man and a 22-year-old gardener were killed when the Activa scooter they were riding on was hit by a PRTC bus and dragged for around 50 metres at the Sector 46/47/48/49 light point today.

According to the police, Madan Lal Kundra, a resident of Sector 47, was on his way to drop Sunil, a gardener, at Jagatpura when the bus hit them from the rear side. A teenaged boy, who was also on the scooter with them, escaped unhurt.

Inspector Ranjodh Singh, SHO of the Sector 49 police station, said the scooter and the bus had stopped at the traffic light. “As the light turned green, the bus driver started the bus and dragged the scooter for around 50 metres before realising that an accident had taken place,” the SHO said.

Eyewitnesses informed the Police Control Room following which the victims were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where doctors declared them brought dead.

The police said the bus driver, Sukhwinder Singh, was arrested and later released on bail. The PRTC bus has been impounded by the police and a case against the bus driver registered at the Sector 49 police station.

Killer spot

On January 31, a 26-year-old youth riding pillion was killed while the motorcycle rider was seriously injured when a speeding car, bearing a police sticker, hit them at the Sector 46/47/48/49 light point.
