Srinagar, July 19

A court in Srinagar has directed the police to register a case against a senior police official in the killing of youth at Tengpora locality of Srinagar on July 10 in firing.

Taking cognisance of the application moved by the father of deceased youth Shabbir Ahmad Mir, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, directed the Srinagar SSP to lodge an FIR against Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)-rank official Yasir Qadri. The youth’s parents had alleged that their son was shot from a point-blank rage.

While passing these directions, Chief Judicial Magistrate Masarat Shaheen observed the police official had acted beyond his powers.

“The applicant (father of deceased) has given an affidavit and as per the facts of the application, the concerned DSP has acted beyond the powers which reveals that there is a case of cognisable offences,” the CJM observed in her orders made available today.

“Hence in the light of the application and affidavit sworn by the applicant, the SSP, Srinagar, is directed to lodge an FIR against the official and investigate the matter. However, the SSP is further directed to get the case investigated by some senior officer not below the rank of DSP,” the court said.

In the application moved before the CJM on Monday, Abdul Rehman Mir, father of Shabbir, had alleged that the incident happened at around 6.45 pm on July 10 when the family was watching TV in the living room of their house.

“A police party, led by DSP Yasir Qadri, forcefully entered their house and started smashing window panes and doors. On seeing this, the applicant’s wife tried to stop the police official, but he got infuriated, slapped and assaulted her,” the affidavit said.

“The official also hurled invectives on the woman and since the son of the applicant, Shabbir, was present on the spot, he could not bear beating up of his mother and tried to rescue her,” Abdul Rehman said.

“On this, the police official started beating up Shabbir. Not satisfied, the police official opened his pistol and fired two shots at the applicant’s son from a point-blank range. Shabbir died on the spot,” the affidavit alleged.
